The University of Coimbra (in Portuguese Universidade de Coimbra) is the oldest university education institution in Portugal. It was founded in Coimbra on March 1, 1290 and by 2017 it has about 22,000 students.
Its foundation dates back to a decree issued in Leiria by King Dinis, the "Scientiae thesaurus mirabilis", which established the University; later it was confirmed by Pope Niccolò IV.
